May 2018 – Richard Billington, Q.C. speaks on remedies to fight fraud.

Richard Billington, Q.C. of Billington Barristers was part of the faculty at the 51st Lawyers Annual Refresher held in Lake Louise, Alberta, sponsored by the Legal Education Society of Alberta. On Saturday, May 5, 2018, Rick addressed lawyers from across Alberta. His presentation entitled “The Tangled Web We Weave” focused on judicial remedies to fight business fraud. He spoke of remedies which are available rapidly when clients find that they have been dealing with liars, cheats and frauds in business. These include Mareva Injunctions (to seize assets to prevent them from being dissipated), Anton Piller Orders (to seize evidence which is at risk of destruction and which is of critical importance in litigation), investigations under the Business Corporations Act (carried out in camera and at the expense of the corporation which is subject to the investigation), shareholder oppression actions and other remedies available under the Business Corporations Act.

Billington Barristers, and in particular Richard Billington, Q.C., have extensive experience acting as Independent Supervising Solicitors appointed by the Court to oversee the execution of Anton Piller Orders, and acting for Plaintiffs in fraud cases. We are also very experienced in advising and representing clients in cases where they have been served with such Orders.
